The past couple years have been difficult for many. As we approach the end of 2022, we hold space in our hearts for all those around the world and in our own communities who are facing challenges.
Here at Fibonacci Web Studio, when we are facing difficulties, we try to turn to our values as our guiding lights. It’s not a perfect solution, but it grounds us in our work and helps us navigate choppy waters.
We find joy in community
This year, BADCamp was back in person for the first time since 2019. It was invigorating to see old friends in person and work together on making Drupal (and Backdrop) even better.

Drupal 7 end of life means looking for sustainable solutions
This was a year of migrations, and preparing for migrations, for Fibonacci Web Studio. This year, the announcement came that D7 EoL would be re-evaluated annually.
We wrote two blogs for Pantheon to explain our thinking around Drupal 7 migrations and provide resources for your own planning. The first blog addresses the major questions we hear over and over again in our work: where should I go and what will it cost? The second blog talks about the dream and realities of one-click migrations to BackDrop and Drupal 9.
We did lots of planning for many clients this year: audits, discovery, and technology reviews aplenty! With D7 EOL not quite as imminent as it once appeared, it gave us time to be thoughtful with the sites we have. For some, we adopted an interim solution: moving them off hosting that wouldn’t support D7 onto Pantheon while we worked through the planning. For others, we went ahead and migrated: many to BackDrop, and some to Drupal 9.
One of our big wins this year was getting SUNet Authentication working on BackDrop on Pantheon. This offers Stanford websites an easier path forward, should they choose BackDrop as their CMS.
Empowering researchers to do good work
We love working with researchers! One of our big projects this year was Mapping Militants, a research project that traces the evolution of militant organizations and the interactions that develop among them over time.
We think this research is so important. The amount of violent extremism in the world is truly heartbreaking. For us, working with these researchers is inspiring. They see a big problem, and instead of turning away, they work to learn more and to help others do research and make policy to make the world a safer place for all.
